Introduction: Oral hygiene is keeping one’s mouth clean and free of diseases and other problems by regularly brushing the teeth. Most oral diseases can be prevented if proper education and awareness regarding oral hygiene are provided to all classes of society.
Aim and Objectives: The study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding oral hygiene practices and barriers to accessing oral health care among auto-rickshaw drivers in Mysore City, Karnataka.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 214 auto-rickshaw drivers of Mysore, whose ages ranged from 18 to 60 years. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a validated questionnaire.
Results: Out of the total participants, 74.3% fall under the primary level of education. A good level of knowledge regarding oral hygiene was observed among 92.5% of the participants, while 66.8% showed a negative attitude toward oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene practices were followed by 59.8% of the participants. The study observed a significant association between age and attitude towards oral hygiene and between previous dental visits and the practice of oral hygiene. The barrier behind not visiting a dentist was said to be the high cost and uncertainty of the dentist’s availability at the clinic.
Conclusion: The present study found good knowledge regarding oral hygiene, and their oral hygiene practice seemed to be satisfactory, but most participants reflected a negative attitude toward oral hygiene.
